The Baker House 1650 (formerly the J. Harper Poor Cottage) in East Hampton has been recognized as one of the finest luxury inns in the United States. It was selected by Condé Nast Johansens as "The Most Excellent Inn of the Americas" and was named "Inn of the Month" by Travel and Leisure magazine. Town and Country said the cottage “offers the kind of plush accommodations that you’d expect to find in an area famous for its residential real estate.” Time Out New York said “the most distinctive B&B on the East End is so mind-bogglingly gorgeous that it’s hard to believe anyone is actually allowed to sleep here.”

Each bedroom is beautifully decorated with linens by Frette, individually controlled central air conditioning and heat, Bartech minibar, in-room security safe, flat screen television with full cable services and DVD, top-of-the-line Bose radios, CD players and iPod connect kits, multiple telephone lines, and wireless internet access. Most of the rooms have wood-burning fireplaces and whirlpools. Bathrooms are lavish, with amenities by L’Occitane and bathrobes by Frette.

Each morning begins with a sumptuous breakfast served in the garden-side breakfast room, in the garden itself, or continental breakfast in your own room, delivered with your choice of morning paper. Local organic produce and farm products are used wherever possible. There are outside tables for eating, reading, or lounging, and drinks are served from a well-stocked bar including a selection of wines by the glass, bottle, and half-bottle. Single malt scotch, small-batch bourbon, champagnes and cognacs are also available.

For business meetings or family gatherings, the inn has a luxurious living room with a large fireplace. There is also a dining room with a fireplace and a well-stocked library with books, magazines, and DVDs, which can be borrowed for in-room viewing.

The Baker House is available for special events including weddings, private parties, and photo shoots. Many memorable weddings have been held in the beautiful house and gardens, starting with the wedding of J. Harper Poor’s daughter in 1915, for which a private train from Pennsylvania Station was arranged to bring some of the most distinguished families of the time to East Hampton for the occasion. We can provide the best caterers, event planners, and musicians to help you create an equally memorable day. Please contact us for further information.

The last thing one would expect in a historic 1648 house is a state-of-the-art spa facility, but this is what one finds on descending the paneled staircase leading to the lower level. A lap pool, spa tub, sauna, steam shower, and change room comprise the spa and although it is modern in every aspect, builder/designer David Tosher and design consultant Gary Jay Paul have created a room that seems to always have been there.

The sweeping lawn and beautiful English gardens have been featured in many books and magazines. Outdoor terraces, a 200 year old wisteria, and vine-covered garden walls transport guests to a manor house in France or the English countryside. A beautiful outdoor infinity-edge pool is available for guests, with teak chaises for sunning. In the summer, guests receive coveted East Hampton Village beach parking passes, as well as beach towels, umbrellas, and chairs.

The Baker House is open year round. While many people see the Hamptons as only a summer resort, some of the most beautiful times are in the “off-season” - the changing autumn leaves, spring, when the first flowers emerge, and winter, when quiet walks on the beach and the cozy accommodations provide an ideal getaway from the stress of the city. As one reviewer wrote, “the rooms are so deeply comfortable that you secretly hope for bad weather as an excuse to stay in”. Shops, restaurants, and theaters are now open throughout the year, with added bursts of activity on holiday weekends and during events such as the Hamptons International Film Festival in October.

Guests can be picked up from the nearby Hampton Jitney/Luxury Liner stop, the East Hampton train station, or the East Hampton Airport (a 10 minute drive). Ample off-street parking is always available. The Baker House also offers private helicopter service to and from Manhattan (40 minutes) for those who wish to avoid the summer traffic.
